Benchmarking

Process benchmarking: an application to lending products

Benchmarking techniques evolved from Xerox’s pioneering visit to Japan in the late 1970s. However, the application of the benchmarking concept to the banking industry did not take place until the late 1990s. Process benchmarking, in particular, is a tool that helps FIs to cut costs, improve productivity and integrate business processes. Although process benchmarking involves divulging what may be considered as sensitive or confidential information, forming de facto benchmarking partnerships with competitors allows participating institutions to compare cost and output advantages and disadvantages, when performing key processes involved in lending operations. This paper presents an application of process benchmarking to lending operations across Australia to highlight differences in costs involved in seemingly identical value chains.

What is benchmark lending?

Benchmark is a term by which we mean a set of standards used for evaluating the level of quality or performance. It cab be drawn from companies own experience or from the other companies experience. While by benchmark lending we refer to the interest rate that banks have to pay when they borrow money. Now you will be thinking that does a bank also borrow money from other in the form of loan? The answer would definitely be yes, banks also borrow money. The bank has to keep some amount of money as a reserve. But sometimes it happens that they don’t borrow money over a short period of time, say one night, and then they don’t have reserves left, for this they have to borrow money on a certain interest rate. Due to this reason, banks and mortgage companies tries to find people who are in need of a loan and then provide them loan, so banks can earn money from that loan given to customer by taking interest. It can be valuable business to the bankers and mortgage companies who are providing loan, when there are lots of customers in the market.

Facebook Takes Steps to Deal With Gift Card Scams

Like many other Facebook users Jeff Crites heard of the US$1,000 Best Buy gift-card offer last month from a friend, a Web savvy director of social media at a Fortune 500 company.

He clicked on a link that took him to a Facebook fan page promising a sweet offer: If he clicked through and was one of the first 20,000 people to become Best Buy fans, he'd get a $1,000 gift card to spend on electronics. To Crites, a marketing consultant who makes his living understanding social media, a $20 million promotion to get just 20,000 Facebook fans struck a wrong note. Companies simply don't give away hundreds of dollars to Facebook fans. "It just didn't seem right and it didn't feel right," he said. "They're going to give away a sandwich or a box of cookies."

He sent a message to the friend who'd mentioned the offer, and within minutes they agreed that it was a scam.

Welcome to the latest Facebook con game: fake gift cards.

A Facebook fan page that poppped up recently offering $1000 Best Buy gift cards. It was a scam, part of a growing problem that Facebook is now trying to deal with.

In the past months, fan pages have popped up all over the social networking site, offering too-good-to-be-true gift cards. There's the $500 Whole Foods card, the $10 Walmart offer, and the $1,000 Ikea gift card. The Ikea page put these gift card scams on the map last month, when it quickly racked up more than 70,000 fans before being snuffed. Facebook has also taken down Target and iTunes gift card scam pages in the past few months.

Many of these pages have fake posts suggesting that the giveaway offer worked, but the sites typically lead to affiliate marketing Web sites that try to collect data and generate Web traffic for advertisers, according to Simon Axten, a Facebook spokesman.

The gift-card scams have been circulating via e-mail for years now, but they're still a novelty on Facebook.

Because anyone can set up a fan page for virtually anything -- and many pages do contain legitimate gift-card offers -- it's a thorny problem for Facebook to solve. Right now, the company is playing the social networking version of whack-a-mole, with a team of engineers monitoring the problem and deleting groups, applications, and fan pages as quickly as it can find them.

The company is trying to get the upper hand on the scammers, however. "We've started building an automated system to detect this type of suspicious content and behavior more quickly before it's even reported," Axten said in an e-mail interview.

Facebook won't say how many people have joined these fake groups, but according to Axten, "this is happening on a relatively minor scale, especially since we're quickly removing the groups and pages in many cases before they go viral."

Axten advises people to "be suspicious of anything that looks or feels strange online - whether it's an unfamiliar link in a message from a friend who hasn't contacted you in a while, or a promise of something valuable if you invite friends, provide personal information, or download software."

Facebook users should be wary of pages that don't seem to be official -- large retailers typically have hundreds of thousands, if not millions of fans, and a slick look with top-quality graphics. And watch out for pages that only exist in order to promote the free card offer -- a page with the word "offer" in its name, might be a scam, for example.

This Facebook page, entitled Do you need new furniture?, offers a $250 Ikea gift certificate, contained a link to a now-defunct page hosted by a Canadian affiliate marketing company called MaxBounty. Late Tuesday, it claimed 327 fans.

Another page, entitled I Love Walmart offered a $10 gift certificate to users who became fans of the page, and then shared the page with all of their friends. There was no $10 gift certificate, and Facebook removed the page for terms of service violations after IDG News Service e-mailed it to Axten.

There are slimmer pickings on this fake $10 Wal-mart gift card page, but it's equally a scam. Facebook took this page down soon after the IDG News Service reported it.

This page, contains a Facebook application that, when enabled, asks for an e-mail address and then pleads, "please join us in our quest to put a FREE Best Buy Gift Card into the hands of 50,000 Facebook Users by Sunday, February 28, 2010." After clicking through this step, there was no gift card, merely a broken link to another marketing site, called Platinum-giveaways.com.

Scammers may be moving to Facebook in hopes of getting access to fresh victims. While they are not widespread on Facebook right now, they're a problem, said Audri Lanford, a co-founder of the Scambusters Web site. "these kinds of things, where they're endorsed in a sense because they [come from] your friends, tend to be much more effective," she said.

Though Facebook's Axten says the scams are only being used by affiliate marketers right now, Lanford pointed out that this type of fake gift card scam has been associated with identity theft and malicious software in the past. The scammers in the $500 Whole Foods gift card promotion were reportedly trying to collect sensitive information that could be used in ID theft.

Avoiding these scams is as simple as following the age-old maxim, according to Crites. "If it sounds too good to be true, 99 percent of the time, it is."

Potential Disadvantages of Dedicated Hosting

Before signing up for dedicated server hosting, there are some factors you should consider. There are some potential disadvantages to dedicated hosting. However, if you can afford the monthly fees associated with dedicated hosting, the benefits often outweigh the disadvantages. It is still important to consider any downsides to dedicated server hosting before making your final decision.

Dedicated hosting is more expensive than shared hosting services. The cost per month can be as high as $99 and up. While this may not be a problem for many business websites, it is often too expensive for an individual to pay each month to host their website. For some websites, such as a hobby website the cost for a dedicated server is often just too much. For larger websites especially those for businesses and organizations the price is often more acceptable.
It is essential that you select an excellent hosting provider. They will own and maintain your server. The server will be stored in their own data center so you must depend upon the host to maintain your server and all their hosting equipment well. If you select a host who is not very reliable, you can have serious problems with your hosting experience. You could find that your website is not line or not functioning as you need it to function. This can also happen with shared hosting of course. However, a hosting client is paying a great deal more for dedicated server hosting and should have a relatively worry free hosting experience.
If you have unmanaged dedicated hosting, your hosting services can take up a great deal of time and money to maintain. Administrating tasks on a server can be very difficult especially if you have very little technical training and knowledge. For this reason you will need one or more people on staff who have the technical knowledge necessary to manage your hosting services. If you do not have an IT staff, that means that whoever works on the hosting end of your business will not have as much time for other tasks.
When you do not have someone knowledgeable enough to manage your hosting experience, you will need to hire an IT person or outsource the work. This will cost your business money in excess to your dedicated server hosting fees. The costs can add up quickly when paying someone to deal with the technical end of your business. It may be more cost effective to consider managed dedicated hosting. In this instance the web-hosting provider will handle many of the technical and maintenance tasks.
Another potential disadvantage to dedicated hosting is that you do not have physical access to the server. Your web-hosting provider will be responsible for maintaining the actual server. They will provide security measures to protect your server and data. And they will be responsible for performing server back ups. If you have a good host this is not much of a problem. However, if you would select a host that is not so good you could lose data or have a service that does not perform as well as expected for the cost.

How Mail Server Works

A mail server is a computer that serves as your electronic mail box, or it could even be considered your electronic post office. These servers that are running on the same software, exchange emails across networks, and they would more or less run on the same email protocol, and email attachment as well graphics that they would use. Companies have their own ISP, otherwise known as your Internet Service Provider, and these ISP servers would have their own mail servers and deal with their own clients' emails.
How does sending and receiving an email work? When you send an email, and the recipient of that email belongs to the same network, the mail server, or the mail transfer agent, sends the email to the email address on the same network. Should you send out an email to another mail server, which means the email address does not belong to the same network, your email is then passed to your mail server first, which is then transferred to the mail server of your recipient. When you then send an email, your email program like Eudora or Microsoft Outlook, would send the email to the mail server. There are different systems to send out these mail servers, and an example of these would be SMPT, which means Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, or the ESMTP, or the extended SMTP. While receiving the emails, you also have to use a specific program for mail receiving which could be any of these systems, POP3, or the Post Office Protocol 3, or the IMAP, or the Internet Message Access Protocol.
Having explained how the email process works, what should work best for your system when you receive email messages that you do not need?
These are emails that you call 'spam messages'. They are harmful in terms of using up the storage area for your mail server. Spammers would take advantage of some mail servers if these mail servers are set up to have the 'catch all email account'.
In such cases, there are two options to choose from. You either choose to use the 'fail' option, or you can go 'blackhole.'
These options are, of course, only handled by your IT department. As an email user, you need to know what options should have better results.
The blackhole option accepts all types of emails, regardless if you do not know the email address sending you an email. After these emails are received in your mail server, they are then deleted. The disadvantage though is that it downloads the email received, taking up bandwidth, and space in your mail server, before it actually deletes the email.
The fail option, on the other hand, stops the email before entering the mail server. This is advantageous to your mail server and to the sender because a message will be sent back to him telling him the recipient did not receive his message, to which he could amend. The email address could've been incorrect, so the sender could re-send the message to the right email address.

Facts About Laser Hair Removal

Over the past ten years the Center for Laser Surgery has been involved in patient treatment and clinical research regarding laser-assisted hair removal. The following material will inform you of the benefits, risks and anticipated results associated with laser hair removal.

How does laser hair removal work?

At the present time four laser wavelengths are available for the treatment of unwanted body hair. In essence, these wavelengths target pigment granules in the hair (melanin) in an effort to destroy hair follicles. Hair follicles are capable of producing hairs of various thickness and colors. Dark hair contains the pigment melanin which serves as the target for energy at these wavelengths. Four wavelengths, 694nm. produced by the Ruby laser, 755nm. produced by the Alexandrite laser, 800nm. produced by the Diode laser, and 1064nm. produced by the Neodymium-YAG laser, have been shown to be effective in the removal of pigmented hair. The pulsed laser energy is absorbed by the pigmented hair shaft and transferred to the surrounding follicle. The heat build-up caused by the absorption of energy by the hair itself is capable of creating follicular damage and retard or prevent future hair production by that follicle.

How successful is the process of laser hair removal?

Don't pay attention to false and misleading claims by so called experts. Patients will achieve varying degrees of success. The application of these laser energies to the skin results in almost complete removal of all actively growing hairs. The number of hairs that are permanently removed as a result of one treatment can vary. Part of the difficulty in eradication of unwanted or excess hair lies in the fact that the follicle has tremendous regenerative capabilities and that these recuperative powers are highly variable from individual to individual and from one anatomic site to another.
In most instances multiple treatments are necessary in order to achieve permanent hair reduction and in some instances treatment may fail to permanently remove all the hair in a given anatomic site. In order to understand the process it is important to understand the biology of hair growth itself. Hair growth cycles are divided into three phases. The anagen follicle or growing hair is the major target for laser energy and represents the most vulnerable phase of the hair growth cycle. Telogen or resting hairs are not actively growing and appear to be more resistant to the laser energy. The transitional phase between anagen and telogen phases known as the catagen phase is brief but also relatively resistant to laser removal.
chin hair removal
Laser Hair Removal (chin)
Depending on the body site, various percentages of hairs are in the anagen, catagen and telogen phase. As a result, it is necessary to treat a given anatomic area more than once in order to attempt to achieve permanent hair removal. Since the anagen phase is most vulnerable, a period of one to three months between treatments is necessary to allow the resting or telogen phase hairs to once again enter the anagen cycle and become more sensitive to the laser energy.

How is the laser treatment performed?

Laser hair removal is a time-consuming but relatively straightforward process. You may be given a prescription for topical anesthetic cream and may also be instructed how to apply this cream (BLT) at home. We can also apply the cream in the office if desired. This cream greatly reduces the discomfort associated with the laser hair removal process. Prior to treatment the hairs will be shaved and the laser treatment will proceed. Treatment times vary from a few minutes for areas such as the chin and neck to a few hours for extensive areas of the legs, back and chest. After the procedure cool compresses and soothing gels are applied to the treated area and patients spend time relaxing before being discharged. Patients are asked to return in one week for a follow-up visit and then are examined monthly in order to determine when it is best to re-treat the involved areas.

What will I look like after treatment?

The application of laser energy to the skin results in a pink color and on occasion crusting in the area will develop lasting a few days. Discomfort similar to a sunburn may be noted over the first 24 hour period and in extensive cases Tylenol or mild Codeine containing analgesics may be used. In certain instances, especially in darker complected individuals, temporary pigmentation changes may be noted. One may notice hair within the follicles for up to two weeks after therapy, however, this will fall out leaving smooth, hair-free skin.

What do I have to do before the treatment begins?

During your initial consultation you will be asked to provide a detailed medical and hormonal history. When indicated, we will obtain blood tests in order to uncover any hormone-related causes which may be associated with the excess production of body hair. Patients who are darker skin type may use a bleaching cream (Hydroquinone 4%, or Kojic Acid) for three to four weeks prior to treatment in order to lessen the effects of brown melanin pigment in the skin surrounding the hair follicle.

What are the risks associated with laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal has proven to be a very safe procedure when performed in physicians offices, not at spas and strip malls. Since laser pulses are a constant energy, there is little chance of scarring associated with this process. In certain instances temporary increased or decreased pigmentation will be noted within the lasered sites, especially in more darkly pigmented patients. In certain cases there may be some degree of crusting during the postoperative period which is treated by the use of bland emollients or topical antibiotics.
Nurses and physicians are on call 24 hours a day to assist you through your postoperative period and to answer any questions you may have during this time.

What are the costs involved in the procedure?

Laser hair removal involves the use of sophisticated expensive laser equipment in order to deliver precise and effective energy pulses. During your initial consultation the areas to be treated will be determined and a fee quote per treatment session will be given to you. This fee involves the cost of the procedure, dressings and postoperative visits. The fee for re-treatment sessions at one to two month intervals may be the same or less than the initial treatment depending on the extent of follow-up treatment needed. Our aim is to provide safe, effective and affordable laser treatments for patients wishing to avail themselves of this service.

What can I expect?

Laser treatment for hair removal currently represents one of the most exciting areas within laser medicine and surgery. Patient variation and the nature of hair follicle growth make it difficult to predict the exact outcome in every case. We are committed to excellence and will attempt to provide a pleasing cosmetic result for all of our patients, however, no specific guarantees can be made with regard to the final outcome.

"This happened to me last year:

I registed a domain name with yahoo. I paid for 5 years.

After sometime, I bought a hosting plan from yahoo. Since I didn't like the hosting plan, I cancelled the plan.

Know what, yahoo cancelled my domain name also! I lost a domain name for which I had paid for 5 years.

Talked, Shouted, Cried - with yahoo support people! No use! Domain name remained cancelled! I had to pay again to get back the domain.

(Their stupid logic: They call a hosting plan as an upgrade of the domain plan. When you buy hosting, you upgrade domain name. So when you cancel hosting plan later, according to them, you cancel not only the hosting plan, but also the domain name associated with it)

Having put up more than a few Web sites myself, one of the easiest ways I've found to get your domains set up and running is to simply go through Yahoo.
Yahoo will register your domains' names for under $10 a year, though as of this writing, Yahoo is having a sale on domains for $2.99 per year. That's a lot cheaper than some registrars I've seen that are still trying to charge $20 or more just for domains.
Once you get your domain registered, you still need to host it somewhere. Again, Yahoo has a simple answer, or several simple answers, in its Geocities service. You can plunk down your domains for free at Yahoo Geocities, but you'll have ads. For a nominal fee ($4.95 per month) you can get 500 MB storage and 25 GB per month transfer -- that's more than enough for most starter sites.
If you host your domains through Yahoo Geocities, you'll get plenty of tools to help you design and manage your site, enough to do just about anything legal you might want to do on the Net.
You'll have access to Yahoo web page templates as well as a point-and-click designer, in addition to the ability to manually play with your domains' HTML.
Yahoo also gives you choices for uploading, using their easy upload manager or the more traditional FTP for large sites. E-mail is part of the package.
A recent addition to the Yahoo Geocities tools is the ability to start and manage a blog on your domains.
All in all, registering and hosting your domains through Yahoo is an easy solution for a home user or small business.

Setup a Yahoo Domain with Your Site

Setup a Yahoo Domain with Your Site
The custom domain name feature allows you to setup your Weebly site with a domain name you've already registered through Yahoo / AT&T Small Business. The changes we request are simple, but it can be a rather frustrating task if you don't have any experience with editing your domain records.  We recommend that you register your domain through Weebly if you are looking to buy a new domain.
To configure a domain from Yahoo with your site:

Start by logging into your Yahoo Small Business account.  Then go to the Domain Control Panel for the domain you want to point to Weebly.

Select the Manage Advanced DNS Settings option from the next page.

By default, Yahoo has two A-Records and a CNAME record (that look like just like the ones shown below) that will need to be altered to point the domain to your site.

Edit each of the three records so that their destination is our 199.34.228.100 IP Address.

When you're done, be sure that you have assigned the domain to your website in our system so we know that you want to use it with your site.  Go here to learn how to do that.  Note that it can take Yahoo up to 24 hours to point a domain here when you make your changes (it usually only takes a couple of hours).  Nothing is happening on our end when you point a domain to our system, so the wait is not related to us in any way and we cannot make it go faster.

The cost-per-click (CPC) is the amount you earn each time a user clicks on your ad. The CPC for any ad is determined by the advertiser; some advertisers may be willing to pay more per click than others, depending on what they're advertising.
